Jose Antonio Buencamino is a Filipino musician who has written for dance, film, and concert stage. He draws from Filipino Ethnic, western orchestral, choral, and electronic music influences, with experiences as a performer in these genres. He graduated in June 2020 Summa Cum Laude with a BM Composition degree from the College of Music of the University of the Philippines, Diliman. He has studied under Prof. Katherine Trangco, Prof. Josefino Toledo, and Dr. Jonas Baes. He is currently based in Freiburg, Germany and is studying at the Musikhochschule Freiburg for his Master's Degree in Composition with Dr. Johannes Schöllhorn.
Jose was a participant of the Manila Composer’s lab in June 2018 with Nina Janssen-Deinzer and in March 2019 with Ensemble Hand Werk. In August 2018, his piece Hininga for western and Filipino instruments was performed by the ASEAN Youth Ensemble under the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music in Thailand. In November 2020 he won 2nd Prize in his age category at the 2020 New Music Generation International Competition held in Kazakhstan for his orchestral piece, Pinaginipang Hibla. He won performance prizes from the Guild of Carillonneurs of North America in 2021 for his piece Hinugot sa Hangin and in 2023 for his piece Breezes by the Sea Shore.
Film music is a passion of Jose's, with multiple projects since 2020. His first full feature film, Nocebo (2022) was a the fruit of a FIlipino-Irish co-production and gathered nominations for Best Score, whilst The Garden of Earthly Delights (2025) was a Filipino-Dutch production that garnered awards internationally, including four Golden Calves at the 2025 Netherlands Film Festival. His work as a Sound Designer for Theater has also been praised, with his work for Red (2024) having received a mid-year citation from Gawad Buhay for Best Sound Design for its artistic subtlety and creative treatment of space.
Jose plays the piano, the cello, and the guitar, and performs as a Baritone. He has a close connection with the sea, and is a CMAS 2-Star Scuba Diving Instructor and SSI Divemaster Instructor. In 2024 he was awarded by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung with a scholarship for his social engagement and academic achievements.
